Liverpool’s Summer Spending Shows the Reds Mean Business

Arne Slot’s Liverpool won the 2024/25 Premier League title by a 10-point margin from second-placed Arsenal, with Man City a further three points adrift. But the club is not taking any chances ahead of the new campaign, and they have already been very active in the transfer market, both purchasing and offloading several players.

In this article, we’ll review the business the Reds have completed by the end of June 2025, and we’ll take a look at some of the other transfer rumours that may or may not come to fruition before the summer window closes.

Liverpool’s Summer Signings to Date

Here are the players who’ve joined Liverpool at the time of writing (1st July).

Players In Club
Giorgi Mamardashvili Valencia
Jeremie Frimpong Bayer Leverkusen
Armin Pecsi Puskas Akademia
Florian Wirtz Bayer Leverkusen
Milos Kerkez Bournemouth
Freddie Woodman Preston North End

The most significant signing to date for the Reds is that of German Florian Wirtz, for a club record fee of around £116m. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is versatile, assured on the ball and has a footballing brain that allows him to stay one step ahead of his opponents. Slot will not have parted with such funds lightly, and Wirtz is likely to play a starring role as Liverpool attempt to retain the title (something they haven’t achieved since the 1980s in the old First Division). The former Bayer Leverkusen man is clearly a positive addition to the squad and adds an extra attacking dimension.

The Reds have also bolstered their defensive options with the signings of Jeremie Frimpong (for around £29.5m, also from Leverkusen) and Milos Kerkez (for £40m from Bournemouth). Although Liverpool possess a wealth of talent at the back, the loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold (see below) left a hole that needed filling, and Hungarian Kerkez goes some way towards addressing that. Frimpong, meanwhile, can play as either a wing-back or as a standard winger and it’s clear Slot is eager to sign versatile players so he has the flexibility to change tactics when necessary without having to change personnel.

Perhaps in a sign that Alisson is at least getting closer to the tail end of his Liverpool career, the Reds also signed goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for around £25m. The 24-year-old Georgian will at least keep Liverpool’s number one on his toes, and Liverpool also added two more keepers – Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman – for a little extra cover.

Who Has Left Liverpool So Far?

Going the other way, the following players are leaving the club (temporarily in a couple of cases).

Players Out Club
Trent Alexander-Arnold Real Madrid
Caoimhin Kelleher Brentford
Dominic Corness Released
Jakub Ojrzynski Released
Vitezslav Jaros Ajax (Loan)
Harvey Davies Crawley (Loan)
Nathaniel Phillips West Bromwich Albion

The major departure, from a Liverpool perspective, is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid. After 20 years at the club, it was bound to ruffle a few feathers when he decided to let his contract run down and leave on a free. Technically, however, Real ended up paying Liverpool a fee of a few million quid to get him released in time to feature in the Club World Cup. That is small change compared to his market value, but it’s better than nothing. And there’s little doubt he played a key part in Liverpool’s various successes in his time at the club.

The other departures are not game-changing, with a couple going out on loan and others released. It was deemed that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher wasn’t quite up to filling Alisson’s gloves, so he was allowed to move to Brentford for around £12.5m, which could prove a bargain if the Irish 26-year-old fulfils his potential with his new club.

Although there haven’t been any really big-money sales as yet, there is potential that either Darwin Nunez or Luis Diaz could be sold (or indeed both, if the prices were right). It would certainly boost the transfer kitty as Slot seeks a few more additions to the squad before the window closes.

Who Else Is on Liverpool’s Radar?

Marc Guéhi

Liverpool have been linked with numerous players since the end of the season. Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guéhi has been regularly linked with a move to Anfield. The 24-year-old would be a quality addition to the squad, but whether he’d be able to displace either Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konaté is open to question. Still, it can’t hurt to have real competition in every position, or indeed quality cover for injuries.

Another name that has been linked with Liverpool several times is Eintracht Frankfurt’s 23-year-old French striker Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman scored 15 goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Frankfurt in the season just gone, and could be one for the future as the 23-year-old could be eased into things if he joins the Reds.

Another option that might excite Liverpool fans is the possible acquisition of Newcastle striker, Alexander Isak. The former Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad striker could be a brilliant purchase, having scored 20+ Premier League goals for the Magpies in each of the last two seasons. However, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe won’t want to lose one of his best players, especially since apparently missing out on the signing of Brighton striker Joao Pedro, who looks set to join Chelsea.

But with the summer transfer window open until 1st September, we think Liverpool will complete a few more signings and perhaps they have one or two surprises up their sleeves. If they add two or three more quality players to those they’ve already got, we think they’ll be in a great position to win the Premier League title once again.
