When it comes to clubs that have some form of rivalry, there has never really been one between Liverpool and Leicester City. Sure, supporters of the East Midlands club have turned up at Anfield in the modern era and sung extremely distasteful songs about poverty and victim blaming, but they aren’t the only ones that have done that. Mainly, though, the clubs haven’t really had periods of success at the same times as one another, with Liverpool’s 18 league titles up to 1990 coming when other sides were pushing them to the limit. Leicester’s title win in 2016, meanwhile, was before Jürgen Klopp had really changed the Anfield culture.

That isn’t to suggest the clubs haven’t had a long history with one another, however. They met for the first time on the ninth of November 1895, when Liverpool were just three years old and the Foxes were known as Leicester Fosse. That ended 3-1 to the Reds, but Leicester got their recent a few weeks later thanks to a 2-0 win in the Second Division fixture. Those early years were noteworthy because of the back and fourth between the sides, with the Reds winning five of the first seven encounters before Leicester picked up back-to-back wins of their own, scoring six against just one from Liverpool in reply.

The Christmas League Cup Meeting

Liverpool and Leicester City have played out plenty of cup draws against each other over the years. They first met in the FA Cup in 1906, whilst the first League Cup meeting took place in 1986, with the Reds winning 4-1. Yet few of the fixtures stand out as being particularly noteworthy. One of the ones that might stick in the memory for Liverpool supporters in particular, though, came about in the December of 2022. Just three days before Christmas, the Foxes arrived at a somewhat subdued Anfield for a game in what was known at the time as the Carabao Cup. By the 13th minute, they were 2-0 up thanks to a Jamie Vardy brace.

That angered the Anfield faithful, who were up for the cup after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back in the 20th minute. When James Madison put Leicester back in the lead 13 minutes later, the overall feeling inside the ground was one of deflation. Diogo Jota seemed to take things personally, however, and made it 3-2 with a little over 20 minutes left. Forgotten man Takumi Minamino scored an equaliser in injury time to send Anfield into raptures and the tie to a penalty shootout. Jota was the man with the winning penalty, cupping his ears to the Leicester fans and shushing them after 90+ minutes of awful chants from the away supporters.
