Liverpool and Hull City first met in the November of 1954, with Liverpool having been relegated from the First Division earlier in the year. Both clubs were members of the Second Division at the time, which is a reminder that even a club of Liverpool’s stature can endure a spell in the wilderness. That was before Bill Shankly’s arrival in 1959, which set the rebuild of the Anfield club in motion.
