Burnley Football Club was created a full decade prior to the formation of Liverpool FC, which in some ways is an accurate reflection of the manner in which football came from the northern heartlands first and foremost. Although you would struggle to find anyone who would make an argument that the Clarets have been more successful than their Merseyside rivals without risking being sent off to the funny farm, they did manage to get one over on the Reds early doors. The two teams met in the FA Cup final at the end of the 1913-1914 season, prior to the outbreak of the First World War.

Neither side had won the FA Cup at that point, nor had they even made the final of the world’s oldest football competition. King George V was in attendance at Crystal Palace, meaning that the reigning monarch watched the game for the first time. Burnley won it 1-0, with salt being rubbed into the wounds by the fact that the goalscorer was a former Everton player, Bert Freeman. It took until 1965 before the Merseysiders won the tournament, at which time they defeated another club that you can read about their record against in Leeds United. In Burnley, though, a rivalry was set.

Not a Modern Rivalry

Although it would be untrue to suggest that Burnley have failed to bloody the nose of Liverpool in more recent years, it is certainly the case that the Reds have enjoyed the lion’s share of success over their northern rivals. That wasn’t the case historically, given the fact that the first eight games between the sides produced one draw, one win for Liverpool and six losses to Burnley. Move forward to the Turf Moor side’s return to the Premier League in 2014 and look at the decade that followed and it’s a very different story, with 12 wins for Liverpool and two apiece for draws and losses.

It is certainly the case that Burnley have made life difficult for the Reds whenever possible. Only two of those 15 games saw Liverpool win by a margin of more than two goals, coming in with just a single goal win more often than not. Sean Dyche was a manager who knew how to make life difficult for the Merseysiders irrespective of who their manager was, so it is perhaps little wonder that Liverpool supporters don’t often look forward to seeing the name of Burnley in the fixture list. The Clarets are proof that just because a side doesn’t win against another team very often, that doesn’t mean that games are considered to be gimmes.
