Liverpool are one of the most successful football clubs that England has ever seen. Although the club spend some time in the lower leagues, the arrival of Bill Shankly changed that completely and they remained in the top-flight every season thereafter, winning countless trophies along the way. The same cannot be said of Brentford, who disappeared from the First Division for some time in the early 1980s and only returned to the Premier League in time for the 2021-2022 season. As a result, the two teams didn’t really go up against one another with the same degree of regularity as other sides we’ve written about.
That being said, there have been some big clashes between Liverpool and Brentford over the years. The clubs faced one another for the first time on the 24th of February 1906 in an FA Cup clash, with the Reds emerging as 2-0 winners. It then took another 29 years before they faced each other again, this time in the First Division. Although the Bees gave a good account of themselves, it was another win for Liverpool before the return fixture handed Brentford their first draw against the Merseysiders. When they met in the October of 1936, however, Brentford put five past Liverpool on their way to an impressive 5-2 win.
Liverpool the Dominant Force
Considering how many times Liverpool have won the top-flight title in England, it is not all that surprising that the Reds would be considered the dominant force over most teams. In the case of Brentford, though, that really is the case. Between the time that the two sides faced each other for the first time and the Christmas of 2024, you could count on one hand the number of times that the Bees managed to get a win against the Merseyside club. That 5-2 win in 1936 is all the more remarkable when you consider that it was one of just four they would achieve in the 88 years that followed, with another coming almost straight away.
The Bees travelled to Anfield and emerged as 4-3 winners in the League One tie that was played out in 1937, with a 2-2 draw separating them. Another win came a year later, this time to the tune of 2-1, but Brentford would then have to wait another 85 years before they could celebrate another win over Liverpool. That came courtesy of a 3-1 win in the Premier League, but the Reds picked up seven wins and two draws during the period that the Bees were waiting for their fourth victory. In some ways, that isn’t all that surprising, considering the fact that the sides didn’t play each other all that regularly and Liverpool were as good as they were.
