Liverpool vs AFC Bournemouth Timeline & H2H Stats

As one of the most successful clubs English football has ever seen, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Liverpool rarely came across Bournemouth in the years past. The Cherries didn’t make it into the top-flight of the game until 2015, with the Reds having called it home since the club made it there with Bill Shankly in the 1960s. League-wise, therefore, the two sides didn’t come across one another until the Premier League era. Leagues, though, aren’t the only way that football clubs can encounter each other. The very first meeting between the two was in the FA Cup, coming in the January of 1927 when the Cherries were officially known as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic.

In fact, the first four meetings between the sides were in the FA Cup, owing to the fact that replays were played in those days. That first encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, with the replay finishing 4-1 to Liverpool. Fast forward 41 years and almost exactly the same thing happened. The only major difference was that the draw in Bournemouth was 0-0 rather than 1-1, but the second-leg at Anfield still resulted in a 4-1 victory for the Reds. Having won the FA Cup for the first time three years earlier, Liverpool were hopeful of going on another run but it wasn’t to be. The sides also faced each other in the FA Cup and League Cup in 2014.

Liverpool Were the Dominant Side

In the May of 1990, Liverpool lifted the First Division trophy for the 18th time in the club’s history. In the same period, Bournemouth had never won the domestic top-flight title. Unsurprisingly, the Reds were the significantly better club, with only the management of Eddie Howe in the 2010s allowing the South coast side to make its way up into the upper echelons of the English game. With that in mind, it isn’t exactly shocking to suggest that Liverpool were the more dominant of the two sides. Even so, looking at the results between the two clubs over the years makes for depressing reading for supporters of the Cherries.

Two draws sit amongst the first nine results that the clubs shared with one another, but all of the others were wins for the Merseysiders. In fact, in those nine games, the Reds scored 18 goals and conceded just five in reply. It took until 2016 for Bournemouth to register their first win against Liverpool, but the good news for the club’s fans was that it came in spectacular fashion. Relatively new manager Jürgen Klopp was delighted to see his side take a 2-0 lead into half-time, only for the Cherries to get one back. It then went 3-1 and the game was all but over. The home side had other ideas, however, coming back to win 4-3.
