The rivalry between Liverpool and Everton is one of the oldest and most historic in world football. The distance between the club’s grounds is tiny and even when Everton leave Goodison Park that will remain the case. Liverpool were actually formed out of Everton, the Reds having been founded in 1892, with Everton having been established in 1878.

The pair have played each other around 250 times, with all league meetings having taken place in the top tier of English football. The fact that the teams are so close geographically, and have competed against each other so often, means this is a true derby, with bags of history and all the ingredients a real rivalry needs.

The first Merseyside derby was played on the 13th of October, 1894 and since then the red and blue halves of the city have met over 200 times in the league. The Reds hold the upper hand, both in terms of league wins and overall, and have won around 50% more games than the Toffees.

As fierce as the rivalry between the clubs is, the Liverpool versus Everton clash has been referred to as the “friendly derby”. This is certainly less the case in the modern era, although even now the Merseyside derby lacks the true hatred that exists between, for example, Rangers and Celtic.

The chief reason for this is that fans of each club are often drawn from the same families. With the grounds so close together, there is no part of the city that is particularly red, or alternatively, blue. With fans of both clubs frequently working together, drinking together and even celebrating Christmas together, the rivalry usually stays just the right side of the line.

Naturally, given the length of the rivalry and the fact that these are two of the most successful teams in English football, there have been some huge clashes between the two over the years. Here are the three times (four, including a replay) the Merseyside derby has also been a cup final:

• FA Cup Final, 1989 – A real classic and coming just five weeks after Hillsborough, it offered some degree of catharsis. Liverpool won 3-2 after extra time.
• FA Cup Final, 1986 – 98,000 fans watched Liverpool win 3-1 after Gary Lineker had given Everton the lead.
• League Cup Final(s), 1984 – The Reds won a replay at Maine Road 1-0 after the initial game at Wembley finished 0-0.
