Liverpool have had a very active summer in the transfer market, and their spending might not be over yet. At the time of writing, the Reds are being heavily linked with Newcastle United’s want-away Swedish striker, Alexander Isak. And there could be one or two others on Arne Slot’s radar. But we shall focus instead on the players who are already part of Liverpool’s squad.
On 1st August, the club announced which players had been allocated which shirt numbers for the 2025/26 season. There are no major changes for the players who were already established as first-team regulars at Anfield, but here we’ll detail the numbers to be worn by the new signings… including the player who’ll be wearing the famous number 7 shirt. Before that, let’s remind ourselves of the players the Reds have brought in during the current window.

- Florian Wirtz – from Bayer Leverkusen – £100m (up to £116m with add-ons)
- Jeremie Frimpong – from Bayer Leverkusen – £29.5m
- Ármin Pécsi – from Puskás Akadémia – £1.5m
- Milos Kerkez – from Bournemouth – £40m
- Giorgi Mamardashvili – from Valencia – £29m (up to £33m with add-ons)
- Hugo Ekitike – from Eintracht Frankfurt – £69m (up to £79m with add-ons)
- Freddie Woodman – from Preston North End – Free
That is some hefty spending so far, but if the rumours are to be believed, it may be far from over. Whether Isak’s move to Anfield materialises or not remains to be seen, of course.

Famous Liverpool Players Who Have Worn the Number 7 Shirt

When he moved to Liverpool, Florian Wirtz suggested he’d like to be allocated the number 10 shirt, but the club understandably didn’t want to upset Alexis Mac Allister, who is currently in possession of that number. Instead, he’s been allocated the number 7 shirt, but there’s certainly no shame in that. The following Liverpool legends all wore that number, and it certainly proved lucky for them.
| Player | Years at the Club | Games | Goals | Honours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kenny Dalglish | 1977 to 1990 | 515 | 172 | 6 First Division titles, 4 League Cups, 1 FA Cup, 3 European Cups, 1 European Super Cup |
| Kevin Keegan | 1971 to 1977 | 323 | 100 | 3 First Division titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 European Cup, 2 UEFA Cups |
| Billy Liddell | 1938 to 1961 | 534 | 228 | 1 First Division title |
| Ian Callaghan | 1959 to 1978 | 857 | 68 | 5 First Division titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 European Super Cup |
| Peter Beardsley | 1987 to 1991 | 175 | 61 | 2 First Division titles, 1 FA Cup |
| Steve McManaman | 1990 to 1999 | 364 | 66 | 1 FA Cup, 1 League Cup |
| Luis Suarez | 2010 to 2014 | 133 | 82 | 1 League Cup |
| James Milner | 2015 to 2023 | 332 | 26 | 1 Premier League title, 1 League Cup, 1 Champions League, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup |
Kenny Dalglish won almost everything there is to win at Liverpool as a player, a player-manager and then as manager. He is an absolute icon at the club and indeed of football in general, and if Wirtz achieves even a fraction of what King Kenny did, he’ll be doing okay.
Among the other great number 7s is Ian Callaghan, who also won plenty of silverware during his long and illustrious career at Liverpool. He also holds the record for the most appearances for Liverpool with 857. That’s 120 more than his nearest rival, Jamie Carragher (737 appearances), with Steven Gerrard the only other man to have played more than 700 times for the Reds (710).
The Best Liverpool Players to Have Worn the Number 6 Shirt

There have been some very good players to have donned the number 6 shirt over the decades. The likes of Jamie Redknapp, Neil Ruddock and Ronnie Whelan each had it for a season each. Jon Arne Riise wore it from 2004 to 2008, and fellow left-back Steve Staunton had a couple of years in the shirt. Perhaps the closest to a Liverpool legend who has worn the number 6 shirt, however, is Alan Hansen.
The classy defender played for the Reds from 1977 to 1990, making 620 appearances in all competitions and chipping in with 14 goals. He won a highly impressive total of eight top-flight titles at the club, plus two FA Cups, four League Cups, three European Cups and the UEFA Super Cup.
Kerkez certainly has some big shoes to fill when pulling on the number 6 jersey, but Liverpool fans will be hopeful he’ll develop into a true great while at the club.
