Christian Benteke is reported to being very close to a move to Liverpool as the Reds and Aston Villa are supposedly in advanced talks

If reports from England are to be believed then Liverpool are close to agreeing a move for Christian Benteke. Aston Villa rate their man at around 32 million pounds and it is expected that it will be Liverpool who will have to play by the rules of the Villains. Randy Lerner and his fellow Villa bigwigs are renowned for running a tight ship and the Reds will have to go well over the 25 million mark if they’re to have any hopes of landing their target.
Honestly though, I feel that Liverpool will have to part with nothing less than 32 million pounds as Villa will hold out for the entire fee especially now that the whole universe knows that we’re 49 million pounds richer from the Sterling deal. While my fellow Reds are getting all excited at the possibility of having the Belgian at our club, all I can think of is one question. Why on Earth should anyone pay 32 million pounds for Christian Benteke?

Brendan Rodgers seems to be convinced that Benteke is the right man for the Reds as the club have made some real progress towards signing the Belgian

Before heading on any further, I will go forth and make a very bold prediction. I, Arpan Mitra, am very confident that Christian Benteke will be a flop if he were to move to Liverpool Football Club. Mark my words my fellow Kopites, this guy will lead to no good. I would never rate him at 32 million pounds and I would never endorse anyone buying him for that elevated a fee. As far as my beloved Reds are concerned though, I would not have us buying him at all.
I wouldn’t buy him for 15 million quid so forget about actually going forward and meeting his ridiculous release clause of 32.5 million pounds. I am aware that my readers will have very distinct opinions about myself after reading this article. One-half will be agreeing with me, but the other half will be getting their pitchforks out and baying for my blood. To them, I say this, how many goals has he scored for Aston Villa last season? 15 is the answer. And how many did he get in the season before the last? 11.

Benteke scored in the semi-final of last year’s FA Cup as Liverpool succumbed to defeat at the hands of Aston Villa

Yes, I will accept that he did score a whopping 23 goals in all competitions in his first season in England, but then again, that was three years ago. Paying 32 million quid for a guy who’s scored 26 goals in his last two seasons is a joke. There is far better value on the market right now. Pedro of Barcelona will surely move this summer and he is being valued at 22 million pounds and I’d like to see us go for him. Lyon’s Lacazette is another lad who I really like and I would like to believe that we could get him for around 30 million pounds.
In fact, I don’t see why we’re not paying 45 million and signing Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund! But then again, I won’t get too ahead of myself here because currently, I’m too worried about us doing something stupid once again. Rodgers has already taken an expensive gamble last summer and we know how that backfired, but while Benteke may not spell trouble like Balotelli did, I really doubt how befitting an addition he would be for us.
