Well, how frustrating was that last night? So annoyed! Our awful start to 2017 continues, with just one win in seven games now in January. That was away to Plymouth in the FA Cup too. We’ve now had back to back defeats at home and I cannot currently see how it’s going to change. Well actually I can, when is Sadio Mané back? Missing him for the past month has been a disaster for us. Not that we should be relying are one man, but unfortunately it currently looks like we are. Let’s see if anything changes over the next few games?

It was a massive night for both clubs going into the game last night, Southampton with the one-nil lead from the first leg, haven’t won a trophy for 41 years and had only been in three cup finals since World War 2. However, we weren’t too interested in that. Yes, we’ve been to some cup finals recently, had some league title runs as well, but we have only won one trophy in the last 10 years so losing last night in a terrible blow. Even more so, if those Mancs get through and go on to win it, when we could have been there to stop them.

We were outplayed in the first leg and we all know we should have possibly lost two or three nil. We were given a second chance and should have easily been able to take it. Even more so with their two recent best centre-backs missing after van Dyke got injured at the weekend. Plus Matip was back for us, along with Coutinho and Henderson after missing the first leg. I thought it was great to have all three back, especially after the annoying confusion with Matip. We needed him back with his size and I do like him, also we had never lost with him in the team.

A win would have made it three Semi-Final wins on the bounce for us and for Klopp too as Liverpool boss. Before last night he had a 100% record as well, after previously winning four out of four with Dortmund as well. It wasn’t to be though.

The match itself was a bit slow to start with, the first 2o minutes was like a boxing match with a few jabs here into each other without too much concern. Sad to see their fans still booing Lovren, get over it, it happens. Eventually though we did start to get hold of it more and our position became more and more direct especially in their half. Then though, with a quick break down the left from Southampton, a cross came in, it was half-cleared and it ran outside the box to Davis, who’s shot was drilled but thankfully blocked.

Then not long after again, without Redmond causing problems down the left again with both Arnold and then Matip getting caught out they had two clear-cut chances. Thankfully Klaris was out quickly to save the first one and the other they ballooned over, both from about eight yards.

In to the second half and how did that go in??? Bloody goal line technology, hah. Emra Can’s hit from the edge of the area, Foster was strangely low but somehow punch-saved it and it spun behind him and I thought it was in. Fair play to the big fella, his reactions were incredible. He was up and back towards his goal so quickly and with a strong right-hand wafted the ball away when the whole of the kop was up ready to celebrate.

Klopp happy with the actual performance, just very frustrated with the lack of goals and finishing.

Sturridge had a mare again and his night was summed when he put a volley over from five yards. Crickey, no one wanted to score. They had the best chances in the first half and now it was our turn. Another Sturridge chance went begging, then Coutinho but no one was hitting the target.  I love Klopp and his personality, but I do find it almost embarrassing when he’s asking our fans to be louder after a chance had gone begging.

We kept going and we had all the ball in the last 25 minutes but defensively they were superb. Klopp was happy with the performance he said afterwards, just very frustrated that we’ve not scored. I think we could still have been better. Although I couldn’t care less if we had played bad to be honest, been happy to just have won. Clearly we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal, but why? Southampton defended brilliantly as I said and I thought the young lad Stephens at the back was unfortunately outstanding for them. He won so many headers.

I don’t think it was a penalty in jury time either, just before Sims broke and laid it off to Long to score. The handball incident earlier on was a penalty for me though, as their guy lent towards the ball with his arm and it came off the top of it. Gutted anyway, knew all the stats they were coming out with before kick off would come back to haunt us.
